How this figure is calculated. Left in the sea, plastic breaks down under sunlight and
releases methane, ethylene and other gases over time (Royer et al. 2018); removing it prevents
that ongoing release. Retrieving and processing the waste responsibly carries its own carbon
cost, drawn from DEFRA conversion factors. The net benefit shown is the first minus the second.
Two things shape it and are stated openly: the avoided-emissions total depends on an assumed
time horizon, and methane and ethylene are expressed as CO₂e using a stated Global Warming
Potential basis (GWP100 unless noted). Marked “methodology in development.”
Privacy: TideyApp™ stores nothing on a server. Photos, locations and report
records remain on your device until you choose to share them. Once you share a report with
AFWR or another recipient, that recipient may receive and retain what you send.
